How To Make Smooth Stone In Minecraft: A Complete Beginner Guide

If you’re looking to upgrade your building materials, smooth stone is one of the most versatile blocks in Minecraft. It offers a clean, polished look and works well for both aesthetic builds and functional projects. This article walks you through every step needed to craft smooth stone, from gathering the raw ingredients to the final polishing process.

Why Choose Smooth Stone?

Before diving into the crafting steps, it’s worth understanding why smooth stone is a popular choice:

Materials Needed

To create smooth stone, you will need only two basic items that are easy to obtain in any survival world:

  1. Stone: Mine cobblestone with a pickaxe, then smelt it in a furnace to turn it into regular stone.
  2. Furnace (or Blast Furnace): Any furnace will work, but a blast furnace speeds up the process.

That’s it—no special tools, no enchantments, and certainly NO REDSTONE - This is a pure crafting tutorial.

Step‑By‑Step Process

Step 1 – Gather Cobblestone

Head to a nearby cave or dig down to find stone. Use a pickaxe (any tier) to break the stone blocks, which will drop cobblestone. Collect at least four cobblestone pieces for a full batch of smooth stone.

Step 2 – Smelt Cobblestone Into Stone

Open your furnace, place cobblestone in the top slot, and fuel (such as coal, charcoal, or wood) in the bottom slot. Each cobblestone takes 10 seconds to smelt into stone. Once the process finishes, you will have regular stone in the result slot.

Step 3 – Turn Stone Into Smooth Stone

Now place the freshly smelted stone back into the furnace (or blast furnace) as a new input. Use the same fuel source to smelt the stone a second time. After another 10 seconds, the output will be smooth stone.

In this redstone tutorial I’ll show you how the same furnace can be used repeatedly for other polishing tasks, but for the purpose of this guide we focus solely on smooth stone.
