What Is the Ligue des Nations Volleyball?

The Ligue des Nations Volleyball, known internationally as the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), is the premier annual competition for senior national teams organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). Launched in 2018, the tournament replaced the former World League (men) and World Grand Prix (women) and quickly became the sport’s most prestigious showcase of elite talent.

History and Evolution

When the FIVB announced the creation of the Ligue des Nations, its goal was to modernize the sport’s calendar, increase global viewership, and provide a more attractive format for sponsors. The inaugural season featured 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams, with a mix of core nations (guaranteed participation) and challenger nations (subject to promotion and relegation).

Since 2022, the league has expanded to include 24 men’s teams and 24 women’s teams, divided into pools that rotate each week. This expansion reflects volleyball’s growing popularity across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa.

Competition Format

Pre‑season Pools

Each season begins with a series of weekly “pools.” Teams travel to different host cities worldwide, playing three matches per weekend. Points are awarded as follows:

  1. 3 points for a 3‑0 or 3‑1 win
  2. 2 points for a 3‑2 win
  3. 1 point for a 2‑3 loss
  4. 0 points for a 0‑3 or 1‑3 loss

Final Round

After the pool phase, the top eight teams (or ten, depending on the season) qualify for the Final Round. The final stage is hosted by a pre‑selected city and consists of quarter‑finals, semi‑finals, and the championship match. The winner receives the coveted gold medal, a substantial prize purse, and automatic qualification for the next year’s league as a core team.

Promotion and Relegation

Challenger nations compete in a separate “Relegation Round.” The lowest‑ranked core team is relegated, while the top challenger earns promotion for the following season. This system ensures fresh competition and gives emerging volleyball nations a clear pathway to the elite level.
